Just an inbred cultist, nothing glorious about it.

Not a religion just people following for advantage than just believing in hope and salvation.

Don't get how these are called religions instead of cults, real life examples of religion aim to promote peace of mind and culture hope in the general populace. They control people(majority) with hope not with what can basically be attributed as drugs which in real life is mostly classified as cults.

This is why I like Yu IlHan from EER. The guy always had enough power/weapons to efficiently deal with the threat without any major losses. And he also ensured that others could also (at least) majorly deal with big threats on their own.
Also, whenever I read about a church in manga and stuff, I keep them under a neutral or slightly negative light. (At least some members do turn out to be useless villain types most of the times.)

@bythos i agree in the current sense with your stance on religion vs cult
the past sense on the other hand (espescially medieval europe (which most of these kind of stories are based on) )

religion was mostly used to controll the masses throug faith and fear (both pretty equally)
if you went against the church you were either a heathen or a witch and would be executed

at one point in history (in the medieval timeframe to be honest) the pope held more power than any king
and if one wished to become king (wether that was throug inheritance or regicide) if the church did not give you their blessing, one could not truly call themselves king

and getting those blessings often involved humoungous bribes (as most churchess were also super corrupt)

PS: those old churchess also used drugs btw... lots and lots of drugs

Maybe I should re-read so I even know/remember who these people are. Kinda hard to care about characters you don't know/recognize, and no MC.

My idea was similar to your just hadn't fleshed it out well. The hope i was speaking in religion is like a carrot after the stick. You want to go to heaven follow the following steps depending on your religion
a. give donations to churc to wash your sins off(indulgence, sparked the protestant movement)
b. inflict self-harm
c. pray everyday and never doubt your belief( in past, now many religion tell believers to doubt so their faith is stronger)
d. Fight wars: crusade, jhihad etc.

A few off the top of my head, not exhaustive by any means. As stated prior it was like dangling hope while putting the fear of hell if they didn't follow.

As for the power of pope, even in medieval times it wasn't exactly true they had absolute authorit. The pope did hold considerable influence but by no means was it absolute or they would be no anti-pope and so many branches of the christian faith.
The pope also needed money(try searching indulgence-gate) and support of their family(most were sons of prominent families), and so it was more of a give and take relation. The pope could depose an emperor and sometimes even a king could depose a pope

The drugs part although right wasn't wide-spread in the true sense of it. Like cocaine was actually used as a dental anesthetic even in late 1800's, so what was banned then and now is different. And wide-spread use can lead to the downfall of empires as seen in the opium trade between europeans and China, where the chinese were becoming slaves to the drug. As such even tough it existed to an extent it was more hidden than the open way this is shown. Even then the general devotees and priests weren't addicts. It was the select circle(basically a cult) who endorsed such behavior.

This is from my limited knowledge of reading up on some histories as I had gotten curious, so in no way am I saying you're wrong but just trying to put across my views. Apologies in advance if there is any mistake in my points.

@Jojeke

I can give a brief summary I guess of the people you see in chapter 29:
[ul]Ja: Your protag. His real name is Sylphias, the silver evil dragon.
Irenu: A molested elf slave girl Ja bought from auction and healed. Introduced in chapter 2. Loyal to Ja.
Sierra: The guild clerk introduced in chapter 10.
Lucille: Princess of the kingdom. Introduced in chapter 10 and protected the slime gang from an earth golem. Completely fangirls over Sylphias.
Rastella: Introduced in chapter 10 and is the vice captain of the royal army. Gets defeated by Ja in a sparring match and gets saved as well later from 2 blue dragons. Decides to seduce our protag.
Geil: Self proclaimed captain of the subjugation squad, a total asshole and has a crush on Rastella. Introduced in chapter 11. Broke down mentally after he found out Ja already fucked Rastella, became a much better person later.
Zack: Introduced in chapter 12 and quickly becomes friends with Ja, due to them both disliking Geil. A complete bro.[/ul]

@bythos you seem confused, cult is a minor religion, pagans and wiccans can be classed as cults (till relatively recently), when it becomes more mainstream that faith is referred to as a religion, they gain legitimacy. If it's based on another popular belief, it's referred to as a sect of that religion, or split off denomination.

As long as it's accepted by the majority, or by the ruling authority, any kind of belief can become a recognized religion. It's how some people could worship murder, bloodletting of lower caste people, or decapitation of the people's heroes.

If your comment is addressing my 1st comment. You may notice that they're hiding their activites from others and as such, it may be inferred that their belief isn't widespread or it is a particular subsection of a major religion( which in this case is extreme in its views and actions). Therefore I said it was a cult. And as per dictionary definition, this holds true.

If it for my second comment( which inturn was a reply). That mmainly was talking about religion in middle ages, not cult.

Only reference for cult was where it actually fit the meaning for a cult.

As or your definition it felt a little too vague such as saying minor or extreme. What is minor is it having 100, 10000 or 100000 devotees. And what is extreme, for the Aztecs sacrifices to their sun-god was a notion of pride and continued prosperity as such they found nothing extreme about it just as they though having slaves was normal and sacrificing them was an honor. So much so warriors fought battles just to bring back slaves.

As for pagan and wiccan, i guess atleast the second one was an example as it is classified as modern pagan religion and pagan itself historically was used as derogatory term for any conquered people's religion and at present it's mainly used for any religion derived from ones that were historically classified as pagans.

The way you're defining it means it will change depending on the person's world-views.

@bythos it seems our knowledge on historic religion follows similar pointers (i read your "counterargument" kind of like it was agreeing with my own knowledge)

for instance i never meant to say that the pope had absolute authority, just facts about how their position is similar to old high-nobility (with it sometimes even surpassing the king)

and with the fact about drugs... yeah... well... according to rumors (i myself am not certain but if true it would not suprise me in the slightest) the original recipe of coca cola contained cocaine

the "drugs" that are now illegal used to even be given to children (as if they were household medicine) if they had any injury (even a slight headache)

my original responce was more in the way of your comment sounding like you compared the stories church to current churchess
but funnily our view of old churchess is actually similar (just not worded correctly)

PS: everyone needs money, wether you are a farmer or the "holy" pope, sadly corruption has existed since the begining of mankind
PS2: i believe you are a good and nice guy and never felt as if your response was negative in any way, i hope this as well does not come over as rude or anything and wish you a nice time ahead
