While you have a point about the ethics of such a relationship, the reality is that is how most spontaneous relationships form. Just two people interacting and something clicks for one side or the other. As someone in grad school right now, I have to say, that depiction of a prof feeling that way about a student is... pretty gross.
Like, yes. Its a common enough thing for students to not really give a new prof a fair shake, and having a student who cares is always appreciated.
But they'd just be thankful. These people are often very professional.
And I say this as often one of the few students who ever actually participates in a class. The idea any prof I've had would feel sexual feelings for me for doing so is so... I would legitimately feel unsafe if that ever happened. Even if they were 'super attractive'.
To go so far as to feel romantic attraction, attraction for a student, violates so many ethical boundaries, especially one who works in your lab.
True there might be some moral questions asked if she were to act on those emotions, but you don't always get to control the thoughts that creep out of the dark corners of your mind. Only how you respond to them.
And her response was to worry that she had gone to far, wonder what she had done, reenact the circumstances, and then freak the fuck out and make sure her inadequacies didn't have long term effects on her student's development.
