Love the same happening to BL 😭, like it makes sense when people talk about yaoi hands and disproportionate bodies, and romanticizing male sexual assault in those stories, straight women drew them for other straight women, it sucks
Sasaki and Miyano’s author put a large and increasing amount of effort into realism.
Almost every type of coming-out type that isn’t completely awful is there.
Questioning of one‘s own sexuality is handled pretty well, as is the difficulty of differentiating romantic and platonic feelings.
When I thanked her for this (which has made me cry) she sighed with relief, because she was anxious to get it right. Could tell she was still nervous she could have done better (and, honestly there is a scene that does ”you’re an exception“ to a degree and it pisses me off).
She even added a character to a friend group that’s not homophobic, but so ingrained with heteronormativity that he cannot fathom anyone being open. He keeps saying things and people telling him he’s being weird.
When they start dating, in lieu of it just ending, the tone INSTANTLY changes. Goes from slice of life comedy/melodrama to slice of life comedy/romance.
”Not in the closet, but not in to mood for the conversation“ evasive is something I have rarely seen.
she did her due diligence. It ain’t perfect, but nothing is.
oh, and the official translation looks fantastic, but the unofficial has a bell curve from “getting the tone completely wrong” at the start, “really really good” around volume 5, and “adding a bunch of random crap on top of mistakes” at this point. Read the scans at your own risk.
BL in general has gotten better, aside the rise in omegaverse which I would argue is not at all queer, as it’s clearly another species and society. It’s also generally really screwed-up.
the scanlation is shit, but Still Sick is a great yuri. Most yuri is still really basic, but less problematic than it used to be. Wait. It’s just as bad. Too much “age gap” and other weird shit. At least the gayness is gay more often? Too much completely lacked men or… reality. When I realised marimite is intentional self-parody I liked it way more. Still basic.
I’m also big into all the non-problematic gender shenanigans that’s going on. Not enough legit trans characters (though a game developer reached back in time over a decade and fixed something by changing it from cringe and basic to a messy self-discovery, which is relatable af), but alternative presentation isn’t just a gag or fetish these days.
Queer stuff of varying quality is being published by non-niche publications (Hana to Yume, Jump imprints, Comic Gene…) some aren’t tagged with anything about it. one that has a title too long for me to be arsed is hilarious, ambiguously queer (the realism of a bunch of random queers becoming a group without knowing is legit) is categorized as “romance” and tagged with “gag comedy” and “happy end”. One character cross dresses for no reason other than he likes it. It’s established that that’s the only reason.
He’s also bisexual. pansexual? Not clear, because it doesn’t matter. Hasn’t come up. This ain’t brought up for multiple volumes.
Ikemen Joshi to Josou Danshi is nice. Age gap with side characters is cringe, but nothing gross seems to happen. Main characters are a het couple, ff side couple with a bi character. Her orientation specifics don‘t come up outside of side content.
A Story About Going to a Mixer and There Were No Women RULES. Fully heterosexual, but… I can’t explain well. It’s all wholesome, cute, funny and interesting relationship dynamics with fun characters. There’s a drama adaptation that looks shit. Bad casting, bad everything.
Josoushite off-kai ni sanka shitemita (I can’t be arsed to translate that right now. I hate this long ass title thing) has multiple cross dressing motivations, orientations and a trans woman that has an arc that left me laughing, clapping and crying. Super good.
This sort of stuff and oooooooood-school (old-shul?) Jewish stuff is all I’ve been reading since a year before covid. (…dang it, I need to get ready for Passover! Such a pain! A week of constipation…)
Getting back into scifi and fantasy, but I’ve just been really hype about things being less shit, and often good.
I AM VERBOSE.
