I'm not sure the good guys/bad guys distinction is so neat here. Kamunabi is effectively the Genocide cover-up agency. And Chihiro doubting even his own father's innocence last chapter seems like a Chekhov's gun of sorts.

You can wage war without exterminating the other side and hiding the whole thing from the public for decades. The only account of the invasion comes from the Japanese, so it's obviously not objective. And no, a few years in jail isn't usually an apt punishment for exterminating a whole ass nation.

Whether you like it or not, "both sides morally questionable" is the direction the story is taking. It's just a bit weird how that whole part of the manga went above your head but oh well.
