I haven't read it myself but I found the book on a Reddit thread: Suruga-jō Gozen Jiai

Also, the entirety of Shigurui and this manga were based on just the first chapter. I remember seeing a synopsis saying that the book was actually about an entire tournament and the other chapters discussed a multitude of other fighters.

I haven't fully read the novel yet, but this manga seems to be a fairly straightforward adaptation of it. The one difference I've noted is that the fights are in a different order but that's not very important.

Actually there's a horseback duel with both participants secretly substituted that I liked that's been left out. A travesty.
