The weird shape of the spirit heart gave the impression it was a fake to trigger a trap.
I would have expected that in some thousands years the elves must have had to deal with thieves a lot of times, and so they must have setup an infinite number of traps, but guess that place in the lunar palace never got any thieves inside before, odd. Their too good security was their undoing, because that left them completely unprepared and vulnerable.
