True, but you also have to take into account that he's the gloomy loner outcast that nobody likes; the worse your reputation or general vibe, the more people will say anything about you, regardless of how believable it actually is.

Speaking from experience, mind you; back in high school (which, granted, was over 20 years ago), there was a rumor going around that I was a mute serial killer out on parole. It's absolutely stupid and unrealistic, but because I was the quiet kid who didn't have any friends and spent most of my time reading books, people believed it enough to spread it.

Oh i get that, he's basically at the bottom of the rung and people will be more than willing to believe the worst about such people. Its still a surprise people could believe and even more so act upon such an outlandish claim.

Yeah, people are cruel. Kids especially are the meanest bunch. Boy is it crazy how people could believe in something so outlandish. At the very least, it would spread as a cruel joke that people wouldn't actually take seriously at the end of the day.
