Well, in that year there aren't many opportunities for the free Afro-Americans to find the job. Even until 1960s there are still many discrimination to the Afro-Americans.

I know slavery is bad. But if the slave-owners giving the slaves basic needs and didn't punish them brutally, I think that's good enough.

I actually love the trope, it makes things not seem that black and white, sure they own slaves but that was the norm, you can say that the system is wrong and i will agree, but the people on the system dont need to be horrible too.
