Out of curiosity, do you know if the kappa city animation they made at the end of the anime is something that's just much later in the manga, or was it entirely anime original?

it was the work at the end of volume 3 (ch21) that they sold at comic A. but its much more expanded in the anime.

in the manga it was a simple UFO vs UFO battle anime with basically no plot (manga eizouken slowly improves and only started to do plots starting with tanuki el dorado) but in the anime they progress much faster, and themes start emerging immediately beginning with their second work about "who is right and wrong" when they show that the school people were eating a ton of crab and hints that the crab monster is only attacking due to his brethren being treated as food, and in the third work, they took inspirations from the town along with the duality of the female teacher being against eizouken but also being an avid gardener who takes care of the school in her spare time (this is completely anime original, along with that ramen otaku guy in charge of shibatama town restoration) and expanded the story into one about coexistence. the whole music being wrong and needing to change the ending etc is also anime original.

Haven't watched the anime in a while, didn't notice all those changes, wow. I guess I usually prefer when adaptations take liberties (because you can never do a perfect adaptation anyway), but neat. Seems like it'd cause problems if they ever did a season 2 though. Not that they ever will...
Thank you very much for the informative explanation!

One thing I noticed is that in the anime they really stress how hard it is to make animations. With them needing to use the auto tune, asking for art club for help, hold ups and issues with productions and timelines and the music guy fucking them over, u can see that they're always on the crunch

In the manga , apart from their first work where u see asakusa and midori sleeping over night to finish the work, everything goes pretty smoothly and it never feels like the process of creating anime is hard for them (apart from human interference)
