wait i thought they chucked it and are making something mizusaki suggested in past after seeing a rivals animation and feeling inferior to it...or is this an extension they decided to add?

Nah the overall storyline is the same. The world has the remnants of an ancient civilization the deeper you go (katana and kuudna are on the very surface) and so they dive down to reach the super ancient civilization that created the ootoris. The extension added here is them making the trip down even more advanced and awestriking.
