MC is acting like a sshole more of a saviour, but I can in a way understand it, he doesn't want to sell his services short.
I think that him staying in Japan instead going to Japan is pretty dumb, but they decided to use the girl having potnetial as disciple and the werewolf being special even in his expert eyes as anchor to make him stay around.
I disliked MC letting a tragedy happen, but I believe it was because he wanted to see the modern world reaction to that kind of threat, after all they did say to him that the demon king was defeated without his help, after making sure they are hopeless and lost a ton of important data he decided to stay around and teach.
I think that how he is letting things go too much they are too restricted by the rules.

Ah okay, so this is a light novel adaptation, and a rushed one at that, cause the elf guy is just not likeable at all right now but he is presented like we should already give him a chance. And not even in a fun way. Which is a  great way of presenting the deuteragonist, like wow great his "the world is so different now!" is through sweets, wao amazing sugoi, definitely never seen that before /s

Idk, I have to assume that in the light novel, they do present him as an asshole through the MC's POV as an unreliable narrator to sell the bad first impressions more, but because the novel readers and artist already know that elf guy isn't as bad as he seems, they subliminally don't present him that way for us manga only readers. But the events are still the same as narrated, so he just looks like a pompous prick

I'm making a lot of assumptions though for someone who has never even heard of the original novel
