Agreed. He's pretty pathetic. From the entry exam, he should've shown how overpowered he is without even using his wand, and he should've understood his own wand's power from the beginning. What the heck....

Yeah the story is a mess, the author made him an all powerful sage that already completed his training to safe the world, but then proceed to made him a total newbie in the new world, not to mention this new world has lesser power compared to his old world XD
