I love seeing the layers peeled back off of characters. It's also great to see Kaoru grow as a character - from someone who can only think of his own feelings to someone who prioritizes the feelings of the person he likes above his own. Character growth is the point of a coming of age story, and i'm so glad that Kodama-sensei chose to prioritize the character growth and story over stretching out the manga as long as possible.
