hmmm i think he realized Berna's feelings from the moment he read her message. my guess is that from the very beginning he has been taking care of Berna under the assumtion the day will come when she has to return to her world. getting romantically involved with Berna would make things...much much more difficult when that time comes. so he is trying to keep a certain level of distance between them...and probably failing
