I assumed it was just a typo when they said "verandah" instead of "veranda" a few chapters ago, but I guess it's intentional. I've never seen it with an H before. I looked it up and apparently it's an accepted alternate spelling, just very uncommon, pretty antiquated, only used in specific regions, and expressly discouraged by some style guides.
