I suppose the "price of commanding" is steep, and I have no doubt that survivor's guilt is horrible, but I don't know if that trumps the horror of being in the ranks when combat was decided by face to face close quarters combat. That sounds like a special level of hell unfamiliar to the modern world dominated by guns and computer guided missiles.
