The old woman vandalizes corpses in order to survive. The servant robs the old woman in order to survive. There's no such thing as objective ethics, it's all just a matter of how we feel about it. It feels more justified to desecrate corpses or hurt others if the alternative is your death, but it still feels worse when you hurt someone than if you just desecrate a corpse. I feel like the servant kinda jumped to a last resort instead of trying less harmful alternatives first. It's possible that some people feel so bad about hurting others than they prefer to die themselves. But it also doesn't feel like everyone should be obliged to think or feel that way.

And upon re-reading this chapter, here's my captain obvious analysis of the manga itself: It seems like the manager's intuitive response to Akira's question is to go for the safe route, which would be analogous to not responding to her feelings and continuing his mundane life as he has until now, but then when he asserts that he won't have to face such a choice, he suddenly realizes that's exactly what he's facing right now, and he seems like he's not so sure about his answer anymore. He also states that pimples are a sign a youth and that he's too old to make such a radical change to his life, but then he ends up getting a pimple himself at the end, and the universe (and the author) is silently yelling at him to get his ass off the couch.
