Something that gets me about this series is it misunderstands a few points regarding crime, chaos and the economy.

An economic recession in the modern era itself does not produce crime major increases in crime, and this is because comparatively in places like Japan the quality of life remains higher than previous eras. More importantly, we can compare eras where Japan was poorer, but there laws regarding treatment of crime were fantastically stricter and more lethal.

Honestly, this manga is not about economic recession, it's about immigration and Japan largely dealing with an increasingly third-world population that is both prone to corruption such as extreme nepotism and bribery, lack of institutional enforcement, and a lack of (Japanese) cultural homogeneity that would otherwise bring order. We can look at the behavior of Kurdish and to a lesser extent Southeast Asian immigrants to Japan as an example.

Essentially, it's what America becomes in many ways after 1965: a reflection of the governments and societies being imported.
