It really do be like that sometimes. Sometimes avoiding that "we're together" stage is the right move as all the emotions and yuck that can come with that can really sour a good thing. It's better to just let things happen naturally sometimes without putting a label on anything.

In my opinon and for what it's worth, they refuse to ''date'' because the idea of dating is very codified and follow a lot of rules in japan ( because hey, it's japan, of course you need to have rules for everything ) and following thoses rules are a pain in the ass for them
For exemple you need to confess before dating, you do the basic couple date ( remember how many times you've seen an aquarium date in a shojo manga ? yeah, that kind of date) you hang out together at chrismas ( because chrismas is for couples and KFC in japan ) and the most important thing, if you date someone it's because you will eventually marry them at some point, because what's the point of dating if you don"t ?

They prefer to live in separate places and have a lot of alone time, they don't have any romantic feelings for each other, nor are they possesive of each other. They are completely fine to stop their meetings as soon as one of them forms a proper relationship. They don't intend to tie their lives with each other at all, neither make family, with or withour kids...should I go on?
