To give the translator the benefit of the doubt, the chapter probably never specified whether his family's Tama was male or female.This was absolutely a very touching chapter in concept, but I kept getting dragged out of it by them constantly stating the cat's name. I know Japanese doesn't use pronouns really like it's commonplace in English, but they really should've used some "she", "her", "they" etc instead of constantly using the one word. Just doesn't flow well.
