Im guessing its partly due to being somewhat strong on the getgo and had Mel from the start which is why he didn't get as much satisfying fights. On the other hand, the current incarnation of Kelvin started off as shitter summoner and greenmage that only has support skills he had to rely on his nakama and had tighter harder fights which saved him from spiraling into battle frenzy.
