To be honest, wouldn't mind loosing some memories. Where do I sign up?

That memory loosing after death reminds me of "Log Horizon", where players who got isekaied to a world based on a game, lost a random piece of memory after death.
Wonder if that author based this idea on this story or they both took it from somewhere else.

When you're quasi-immortal, losing one's memories is the biggest fear you'll have, I guess. Replacing the loss of memories instead of death feels like an appropriate consequence.

Maybe.
Then there was a group of players who purposely got themselves killed in "Log Horizon" because they knew they're probably never going to see their family or loved ones and tried to "force reset" themselves... you probably can figure their morality as the experiences they had were like unfinished jigsaw puzzle.

They didn't manage to reset themselves in the end, I take it?

Unfortunately, they became basically NPC in sentient world, fortunately attacking only mobs.

It was to show the "players" are immortal, but at what cost...
