I find it really frustrating in these types of stories how fixated the MC is on avoiding the main story. Sure, if you “avoid the Hero like the plague” you won’t be killed for betraying the hero.

Sure. But it looks like everyone in his family, other than the cute imouto, meets a bad end. He might as well take the opportunity to disassociate with his family while he can and build up a better reputation.

He also has 5 years before the main game and I doubt the og story would have written what he would have done in those 5 years.

Its a valid critique, but I think it's fine in this case. Because of the full context.

I do hope that he plans to be a party member at the start of the game though, because not being in the heros party seems like it could have negative consequences due to being a man down
