Speaking of which, IIRC D&D is also where the stereotype that cleric uses mace (or other blunt weapons) came from, which is apparently because blunt weapons are "non-lethal".

That's actually due to an IRL pop-cultural reasoning.

A famous tapestry depicted a bishop that was wielding a mace at the Battle of Hastings because it was an object that "did not shed blood" and also wasn't a "weapon".

Pop-culture, history, and the precedent of at least a few other priests also wielding maces and the like for similar reasons cemented the idea.

Not really... It was simply a ham-fisted attempt at "balancing" the Classes..
