Assuming a medieval-European-inspired setting, which seems reasonable considering the genre and what has been shown so far, hunting would not have been an available option for the children most likely. Most hunting areas were either strictly controlled and regularly hunted by the nobility, in which one would receive harsh punishment for even foraging for plants within them, or were open to commoners and generally sparse of any animals or usable plants due to a tragedy-of-the-commons situation. People weren't stupid, they wouldn't leave a good source of food available when they are regularly on the brink of starvation.
