And also wanted Potter as some sacrifice to stop Voldemort. Why else would he never even train him is self defence magic or anything. Instead being left alone to own devices.

tbh i kinda see the logic here...imagine a situation or a mission in which you have to retrieve something within a certain time frame otherwise something bad will happen...it's pointless if you can get the item but fail to come back within the time frame and causing the disaster to still happen
