I have the impresion that this double chapter is a flashback and happens WAAAAY before in the series. She has been using that S&W number 3 since chapter 2 page 4, and if the witch of chapter 16.1 page 2 is Bertha, she should have the scars and hook she got since last time she tangled with Vashenka

The story isn't in chronological order. My understanding is that this arc is actually the second chapter chronologically, right after chapter 0. This is about the defense of Kiev during the Barbarossa offensive, and according to myth Baba Yaga's hut is right in this area.

@brhh I just went through the entire series. Yep, this chapter happens in 1941, and every chapter other than this happens in 1942 or later. Including chapter 2 (in which Vashenka already has her trusty S&W). So this one happens after chapters 0 and 1, and before chapter 2.
