I rarely read SF manga because I'm used to western SF novels and I just can't hack how half-assed SF manga generally are. Most SF manga aren't real science fiction, in that they don't even get the science wrong so much as put tech-looking trappings on, usually fairly empty, fantasy adventure stories.
This also is not sweating the realism or science--but here, the sort of science-looking trappings are in the service of something a lot deeper and sadder. They're tailoring the technology to create the personal and social conflict and heartbreak the mangaka wants to tell a story about. It's impressive and has an impact. I really like this and would be very happy to see the rest scanlated.
