I'm so confused. Is the first half of this manga and the 2nd half just two separate stories with the same name and design for the main characters?

It's the same story, it's just that they added a load of backstory that wasn't ever mentioned initially.
Seems like they needed to come up with drama, but didn't want to go for the generic options, so they invented another brother (despite Kou previously making it sound like he never had one) to be abusive to Kou.
