I really enjoyed this one-shot! Enough for me to look up Kenshin Ishikawa, this one-shot's mangaka. This seems to be his debut work, both on Jump+ and as a mangaka, excluding a rookie one-shot contest entry on Tonari no Young Jump from 2024. I'm really impressed!
The paneling is intentional to a degree that I rarely see in manga: most pages have thought put into them to maximize impact or communication. Page 2 was awesome in particular; the cropped panels of Nishu's sister's face guiding the sight towards and matching up with the full face was just clever. You can tell that the mangaka learned from Fujimoto lol
I love Nishu and Fujimi: they are expressive and efficiently characterized. I get the sense that I am just looking at a day in the lives of these dysfunctional girls: wake up, eat French toast, do some murdering, worry about laundry or shopping, then rewatch Back to the Future for the god-knows-how-manyeth time. Their designs rock too.
Lastly, the one-shot's vibe was just right for me. The humor is irreverent and on-point, keeping this from becoming a depressing read. The mangaka also evidently threw in whatever they wanted: extremely obvious Chainsaw Man / Tatsuki Fujimoto, Pulp Fiction, and Back to the Future tributes aside, the Saburo S-25A is a Ghost in the Shell reference, and the entire one-shot is clearly based off of Baby Assassins. Ishikawa managed to take all of these influences, understand what made them engaging, and synthesize that into their own coherent and very, very fun work.
Overall, this one-shot was effortlessly charming; I would absolutely read this if it was a serialization, but I assume it is probably a one-off – it seems self-contained, and an actual serialization would likely be a copyright nightmare. Unless..?? Either way, I will be interested to see what Ishikawa makes in the future.
