I don't believe that he keeps his skills in literal sense (it is said that, on the contrary, he doesn't have his thief skill “calmness” now).

However, he might have all his earlier traits of the person — and thus his newer sage skills somehow are recreating his earlier thief skills: magical unlocking instead of mundane lockpicking, then it might be some sage's “peace of mind” instead of thief's “calmness” and so on.

He'll be a unique one-of-a-kind magic-powered super-thief. That's my guess.

Statistical evidence has long supported a theory that a lot of reading induces myopia. I have not kept up with research well enough to know what-if-any mechanism has been proposed.

The issue with reading book for long time is retina in your eyes will change its position because its forced to adapt with new sight. For example, if you use smartphone with 1 feet range (30cms) from your eye, your eye will strain a lot and you cant see well outside from that range because your retina position changed over time. To normalize it, you need to see long-distance object for some time (at least on 20 feets or 6 meters) and your sight will fixed over time, the same thing applied when you get far-sightedness issue (3-5 feets or 1-1.5 meters)
