One thing I always enjoyed about LoGH is the multidimensionality hinted at across so many of the core characters and feeling of time, of the shifting currents and clashing interests of the age. Even the emperor, who would be so easy to make a completely contemptible and foolish figure, is not without self awareness that comes from age and position. It feels right for the basic affliction of a dynasty that is in its twilight, the roaring fire of its founding cooling into dull coals flashing occasional new embers, waiting for one of them to catch light and start a new fire that consumes the old once again. This adaption does it all quite well, without requiring massive numbers of pages or extreme detail, the postures, shading, and brief thoughts are enough.
