It's actually better they don't team up for their own sake as well. If they keep moving with him, they'll have less opportunities to grow and earn points and stats. Granted, MC would definitely still try to monopolize what he can regardless of their choice, it's still better for them to move wherever he isn't monopolizing stuff and at least earn points and stats far from him than waste time being around him.
Although I guess they could still be friends. I'm sure MC will still need allies and people who can help him fight the "Outers". In that case, it's better to maximize resources however they can.
