But it's not gross being able to distinguish handwriting?

"Oakley did not say that."
But she would, if she dared.

Mission succeeded successfully. Wait, what? She asked a question covertly, he understood it perfectly, and responded in a way that she understood the message he wanted to tell her. That's all kinds of illegal.

This is the best letter-reading chapter ever.

Ahahaha. Oh man, it's funny how the internal voice kept switching between Sandra and Oakley. I guess that happens when the writing and words don't match. It didn't help that Sandra and Oakley had a lengthy conversation. They even managed to transcribe their conversation somehow. I'm glad Evans' ending remark helped Oakley understand she has a chance at being Evans' romantic target!
Why is recognizing someone's hand writing gross?
But it's not gross being able to distinguish handwriting?
In the West, it could be. After all, why would you spend your time reading handwritten stuff?

As opposed to reading what? Handwritten stuff was normal back then, and as someone who grew up with that, learning someone's handwriting isn't exactly hard or unusual, especially if it's someone you read stuff by. She's obviously given him written notes or paperwork or something for him to learn her handwriting, and considering how much they've interacted, it's probably not an insignificant amount.
