That opening page was rendered with such realism (not just the detail, but the proportions and such) that I keep wondering if this is a real guy that they just made a semi-fictionalized manga about.

The mangaka just throws that kind of illustration out there to flex here and there, he did it a fair amount in other manga he's done, like the 'Tough' series.
