Holy hell is it easy to tell that the story is just being made up as they go. NOTHING feels thought through. Gull trying to repay his debt, when he only was defending himself doesn't make any sense, at all, and makes the story just feel forced. Same with him realising he has headaches only after the teacher mentions it. The conflict with the nobles feels wholly dependent on them being retarded, evil and unfair. Gull being as naive as he is with letting that last guy escape despite growing up in a merchant group is, I mean I can only suspend my disbelief that much. Read this if you like power fantasy slop, I've for sure had my fill.

The two of them don't really have a deep relationship. In a world such as this, Kuon had proper reason to kill him there. Afterall, besides joining the side which was in the wrong, he did "kill" her. By doing this he did cause at least some damage. Him feeling a sense of debt is comletely justified. The headaches are another non-issue since he has no actual understanding of magic. He only knows that what he is using is magic of some sorts, but no deeper he has no understanding of how it works, why it works and what the broader repercussions are. How should he have known that he was fast approaching deaths door? He knew he was putting a strain on his body and thus used his abilities sparingly, but who would think that after only a handful of uses, you would go from a few hours unconcious to death? Especially when after like 4-5 uses he is only out for a day? The point about nobles, sure. I's correct you on the terms, since it's more ignorance, narcicism, hubris and some stupidity. The old man isn't wholly evil and stupid. He underestimates mages and feels wronged. It's an extremely common thing in our world. It's victim mentality just with him being in a position of power. And for the last point, I don't necesarily believe that is hard to believe. As you get further in the manga, you realise more how the mercanary group of his father operated and I wouldn't put it past them to leave such weaklings alive. Besides, they are just a bunch of run-of-the-mill bandits. In what world would they ever pose a threat? My suspension of disbelief actually vanes more by the fact that Kuon kills the fool than Gull leaving him alive. Gull isn't naive, he just jugdes that there is no point persuing the issue any further. He has no issues with killing. This much should be obvious from that shrt encounter as well, but is reinforced in later chapters as well.

I won't tell you to pick up this again, because I know you won't enjoy it now that you've developed these views, but you are missing crucial subtleties and I won't stand you tarnishing this hidden gem because of that. The worldbuilding is on point, the characters behave like actual humans, dialouge is well written, and it has good art. It's a very good read and I very much dislike the fact that multiple people, including you write this off as less than average. This is at least a good, if not very good-great piece.

He is guilty of being fooled by the same noble as the mage was fooled by, and is thus indebted to the mage for this reason? What? Doesn't this make the mage a massive hypocrite? Why the fuck would he be willing to follow her for this reason? Is he dumb? How am I supposed to like these characters?

The timing of him being at deaths door in relation to his use of "space dragon eye power" is just incredibly convenient, it is just a way to power-cap him and strengthen the mages presence in the story. The author never bothers defining her powers or the breadth of her knowledge since she will pretty much keep serving as a means of magically advancing the story whenever it is necessary. Her power is magically conjuring whatever bullshit the author calls for at that particular time. I do not care how many lifetimes she has lived. Boring and lazy writing.

The reason I do not like the conflict with the nobles being dependant on their lack of character, has nothing to do with believability, but that it rather makes the villains nearly impossible to sympathise with. Also boring and lazy writing. It doesn't feel thought through in terms of writing an enjoyable story, they are just one-dimensional vehicles of conflict.

That whole scene with Gull letting that fool escape IS PRECISELY for the author to say that Gull is naive, thus further making him dependant on his newfound all-knowing, all-powerful boring ahh forced ahh master. Whatever bullshit they said about his father later on doesn't matter, it is still hard to believe that they'd operate like that. Also, it'd be much more entertaining if his mistake came back and bit him in the ass instead of his master resolving the situation for him.

I do not claim what those multiple people have said as my words. It isn't good just because you say it is good. And none of the things you brought up is a crucial subtlety just because you say they are. They are purely your justifications for liking this manga in opposition to my views. These are my justifications for continuing to dislike it in opposition to yours. My rating is my rating, that is it. I gave this shit a 3/10, purely because the art is good, which is like the only thing we agree on.

If you are going to insist on reading a Shounen manga, you'd gain much greater enjoyment out of reading Naruto, or just read a proper Seinen manga instead if you like edge-lord shit.

I do want to say one thing though. Ignorance does not alleviate a crime. It doesn't matter what you believe. If you commit a crime, you should get punishment corresponding to that. This applies even in our world. If you go to a new country and don't know its laws and thus commit a crime, you will still be held accountable, since it's your responsibility to follow the law.

Point is, he isn't guilty of being fooled. He is guilty of assisting a criminal, a cheat, conman, whatever you want to call it. And the fact that he was unaware of the situation doesn't mean he shouldn't get punished. He is basicly an accomplice to banditry and should be punished accordingly.


Sorry for the long reply again. Wanted to keep it short, but rambled a bit. You strawman-ed my argument and that made me a bit angry.
