@Lithe Yeah. But the joke needs to work from two fronts.
First, it needs to be something that Reg misunderstand as referring to his penis. Then he needs to realize the mistake and still find the actual intended meaning "irredeemable" anyway.
In the original he finds it "irredeemable" that there is a dog trick called "Chinchin". That doesn't work well if we leave it as "Up", or "Stand up" in English.
Also, Reg isn't really a perv, so if his first thought leads him to think on his own penis, it's must be because Riko has been using that word so often with him.
Finally, some were thinking that since Reg is very naive and pure of heart, of course he thinks that Riko is dreaming of her dog. But it perhaps Riko was actually having a naughty dream about him, not the dog. It all fits: "Hand. Where is your hand? Hard..." Smile "Ah. Chinchin." if you think on it. But we wanted to leave it as subtle as it is in the original. In that sense, we opted for not translating "hand" for "paw", to let it be ambiguous.
I hope you understand it's difficult to make this all these pieces work together at the same time.
So we went for the "Big" thing instead. Riko has been telling everyone that Reg's penis becomes "big". So it kind of works that when she says that, Reg immediately connects it to his genitals, out of habit.
In this case, we couldn't make it work that the word Big, related to dogs, was irredeemable per se. So instead we changed it so that Reg finds irredeemable the fact that he thought first on his penis. He's calling what he just did 'irredeemable' (as he did in the hot spring). Also, the "big" option keeps the ambiguous reading of the comic mentioned above still working.
