I'm guessing more of an actual reason it boils down to "plot armor/contrivance," but... Why the fuck would the sniper, who by all means seemed undetected until he fired, fire into the gigantic spirit creature that so far seems to have a passive shield instead of the magical human which, so far, we've seen them utilize active shield control for the most part? Not only that, but a magical human is still somewhat human. Putting a bullet into them, especially a .50 BMG, is probably going to ruin their evening plans even if it has been drastically slowed down by a shield. Especially when you consider that the same chapter points out that blood-loss isn't a thing with the spirits whereas with humans it's a particularly big issue after getting hit by high velocity projectiles.
