I guess I just wish more authors actually tried to write villains that are interesting and engaging past being a mild nuisance.
Not exactly a nuisance...
Besides the usual tropes, MC is fighting the inertia ( and let's be fair... sheer incompetence..) of Academia.
It's a bit of a thing in Real Life™ as well..
Plenty of people with a degree ( not classified as Advanced Basketweaving..) and sufficient, if not superfluous, intelligence and talent decide to turn their back on Academia as soon as they're able to and do something useful with their lives.
Because Academia does
not exist to promote knowledge and research... It exists to provide a cushy job and promotions for Bureaucrats and their Friends.
There's a solid reason everything but the utter fundamentals are researched in Commercial Life. At least
there you have a measure of meritocracy, and the Office Politics are far less lethal and backstabby.
And that's for Western Academia... Gods past, present, and future know how bad it likely is to be in Asia with their society built on Seniority and Standing...
