While Bonnie's magic is very straightforward, ML's poses an even bigger problem by being an actual one-trick pony of deception and she doesn't seem to have a lot to her so far in terms of personality, while Bonnie is a smart fighter. There's little to be gained storywise from ML advancing to the next stage.
