Moreover, some of the demon lords actually need to be nefarious, for the sake of the story. That's the reputation they have got, and it's not all thanks to the church teaching the people they are dangerous entities. They all even carry a portion of the demon king in the demon lord seal. It would make sense if none of them were any saints, most were neutral only chasing their own magical goals (not letting anyone get in their way), and some were utterly rotten, like Bifrons. Since this is quite a feel-good series, there's a danger of the author accidentally making all the demon lords too decent and reasonable people. Such an accident would make Chastille's work too easy: she's supposed to bring the church and mages closer together, to have a force capable of facing the demons/real demon king.
