Indeed... This chapter doesn't make any sense from an economic point of view. Even in a medieval town, there would be some kind of pawnshop were he could have got the money he needed to survive a few days, using that pocket watch as a collateral.

Or... heck. He could get the money just doing small jobs here and there, while the girls stay safe at the inn. That would even be a valuable lesson for the girls.
