Nah, I feel like he's being brave about their confrontation, like he was already beating him all along when Rei 'wasn't human', so now that he is, he has to convince himself he can beat him in order to win, or it might get tricky, because he actually doesn't know what he'll be capable of at the due date.
Though he's still better if he can stay cool headed, supposedly.
