Not sure if that's the author intention since there's been no reference to real faction struggle but the king comes off as extremely weak. Not only people who could easily be traced back to the second (unloved) prince's faction question his beloved daughter's primacy in his presence but petty court intrigue reaches the point where the maid of a low ranking noble is brough forward in his own hall, by someone else's command, not for a formal accusation of wrongdoing but simply to corroborate rumors around another low ranking noble. One that has enough of his favor to be invited to meet him at that.
