That was actually pretty good strategy if you have practically unlimited funds: first offer needlessly much and then have your own people laugh at and ridicule you publicly. That would instantly make the majority of other potential bidders hesitate. Of course someone wise who had their own suspicions/agenda wouldn't care about any such stunts, but those who have no deep thoughts about it would feel like they would be even greater fools by trying to compete.
This sort of strategy suits Yang Kai fine: he never forgets about the slightest of grievances and hold a petty grudge till the end of the world when it's about strangers, but when it's about his friends and family, they can keep laughing at him and badmouthing him a whole lot and he just takes it as good sport.
