What where they even trying to do, huh? It seemed like this was the very plan. Otherwise I can't see why Yang Kai, of all people, would have been doing this. If he wanted to get rid of the ink giants, for the time being or permanently, he obviously wouldn't have been fighting them like an idiot. He would have created a celestial phenomenon, for example, to deal with them. He knows more about those than anyone alive, after his 500 years trip to the universe furnace and back.
