If the fifth brother knows Yu Xian has a good relationship with Yang Kai, why would he still choose her? He was free to pick any warrior from the blood hall, as long as he could afford him/her. It's not like Yu Xian would be the cheapest one and he was forced to take her. She's not the strongest, but far from the weakest as well.
Probably just assumed that Yang Kai would be eliminated early on... But yea, it's not the brightest idea.
