Writing in a notebook about restaurants. Duncan Hines did this when he was a traveling salesman. He compiled his observations, and incorporated those of friends, into "Adventures in Good Eating". In part, Hines' objective was to save travelers from food poisoning, which was a real risk before health department inspections.
