The thing about rice is sort of cultural. For Asians in general, eating a "proper meal" often means eating rice. Anything that can be main dishs but not rice (i.e. noodles, breads) are considered just something to eat seldomly, to satisfy a "junk food craving". And rice is pretty fulfilling on its own, and it's more often than not eaten with savoury side dishes. As an Asian, I'd crave rice if I go more than 2 days without it, so yeah, I can understand why isekaied JPs are so moved when they can finally eat rice again.

Asian but can’t imagine having white rice on its own without meat, maybe a fried egg but idk how easy it is to keep as a “struggle meal” if ur living on ur own vs cup ramen, depending on how much ppl
Are willing to buy their own rice cooker in college, tho at a restaurant unless it’s a beef bowl/no other option I’d prolly picked fried rice over steamed rice since we always have rice at home

Orange/Mexican rice is pretty good too

I believe your case is more a personal preference? Having rice without meat is pretty normal, there are vegan, and ppl from my parents' generation rarely got to eat meat to due economic situation at the time. As long as there's a salty(savory?) dish i.e stir-fried veggies or some fish sauce or salted sesame to go with rice, it's a fulfilling meal already. Eating noodles tends to make me feel bloated (I absolutely love them but yeah), and bread feels kinda like fast food.
