Buying stuff you have no idea about the value of is questionable. His sense of money is roughly on the level of tiger girl.

The merchant guild should be more reliable when it comes to prices. They're more inclined for a long-term relationship, which means ripping someone off is not in their best interests. It's also an organisation he's supposed to be part of. Unlike some random tourist trap.

What he should do before leaving is figuring out what trades he can make over the ocean. There's bound to be more than just the silk/pepper trade.

He's actually just an embarrassment as a merchant/trader. Like, I get haggling as a hard bar, especially for his character, that's definitely a skillset to work on. But, after all this time, he's basically still trading like a tourist. Not doing any R&D on market prices before just buying stuff as he casually meanders around. Not trying to corroborate pricing he heard from the guild while in the market (maybe the pepper is even cheaper, the silk even more expensive, etc). Not asking about price history/drift. Some stuff is cheaper or more expensive because of the unrest, what's the price generally before the conflict, how long the conflict looks to go on, what stuff is going to get scarce, etc etc.

Why do I feel like that vice leader scammed him.
I mean it feels that way, but since the MC did 0 market research beforehand it's hard to tell.
However, the other people in the city certainly did.

It's possible she "skims off the top" even if its not as big of a ripoff as the other traders.
One would hope that as a trade guild leader, she would be aware that blatantly scamming people is a terrible long-term plan.
even if the sea is dangerous and few people make multiple trips.
It is going to come to light eventually and ruin any future trade deals.
Im bad at bargaining too so i always shop online lol
Most people are as most things have standardized prices in most developed countries.
It is kind of silly and somewhat backward that most richer countries don't bargain at all unless its on super expensive items.
( like houses etc. )
But it sure is nice to not have to visit every single trader to figure out you are being upcharge by like 300 % when buying food.
it's part of the price you pay for capitalism and everyday comfort.
